#69The game was taking too long and I was giving up hope on finishing it when I found. Goodie Caves!I love that this game allows you to cheat in order to make the game shorter. Very nice touch from the developer! The story was pretty good. I'm not sure, however, how I feel about the story being separated by multiple games. It felt like it would have been more rewarding to have breaks in the story and allow the next game to pick up rather than make the player feel as though they were left with nothing but a cliff hanger. The game play itself was very smooth.Regardless of how I felt about the story ending in a bit of a cliff hanger, I can't help but add a thumbs up for this game.:).Moderator comment.I see what you are saying about the cliff hanger. I suppose that's why they split this particular game into three parts.

If you consider that most games of this type used to cost a minimum of $20 each only a few years ago, but since the recession hit prices have dropped dramatically, the developers have been very wily and split this particular game into three parts. They are still self contained, but to link the three they have had to create a story line that links each game together.I really don't know whether we will be getting another on in the series. I suspect not, though I reckon we are more likely to purchase the final one in the series if the second one was also given away in the not too distant future. Game play was similar to what you would expect from classic FFantasy and Phantasy Star series games.

I personally liked the dark theme and after playing the game through (About 10 hours or so), I felt inspired to purchase the reamaining ones in the series and have done a complete playthrough of the Orbs of Magic series. Gameplay and story were great, but I felt it could have had a little more detail to the story. The ony complaint i had was that the menu list kept changing order. I can understand this being it was a game that was developed in chapters, but it annoyed me a little.I loved Mel and company's character development in the series. Again Fairly well written.I personally give it a 9/10. Downloaded fine and installed perfectly on Win 7 x64 Home Prem. I have two suggestions I would make to the developers is to have the sound and music separate, so that the music (good though it is) can be turned off without loosing the sound. I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't always want background music, but I hate to loose the actual game sounds.

Also, the ability to zoom out or to have a map of the area (even if only the area traveled by the character) would be a big bonus. Thanks GOTD and Amaranth!.Moderator Comment.Thanky ou for your feedback. I've been been playing this for several days now. It's a high quality, enormously funny and entertaining RPG. The side effect is it also wraps the EXE file and make debugging difficult. Think of it as ASProtect's little brother.Related is UPX, which is another EXE compressor, but that one you can decompress the resulting EXE, and is open source. If I have to judge the quality of ASPack and ASProtect, I'd say they are poor for protecting EXEs. Their debugger checks can both be bypassed by modifying the return from the Windows API call IsDebuggerPresent.

The new SKE edition of ASProtect is apparently more secure, but I haven't seen a lot of it around. @35: ASPack is an EXE compression technology used to reduce the size of EXE files. #61Thank you to all who left constructive feedback; it was much appreciated. For me this was one of the best giveaways in quite some time. The total number of downloads was just over 8000 which is an average download number for this project. I'm quite surprised that it was so low considering it was a new giveaway being given away.I didn't expect it to reach the dizzy heights of a couple of the more popular genres such as the HOG's and Match 3 games that have recently been given away here which have had between 18 to 21 thousand downloads each despite having been given away previously; then again I suppose RPGs are a niche market that many casual gamers won't bother with. Cest la vie.:).Now it's too late as the giveaway ended less than a minute ago.;-). The Mod recommending the DEP fix on one of your comments prompted a google search on how to do it, was easy for me to find, I thought you would take the same path or I would have posted a link to the guide I found. I was much happier with that than some of the wierd dll fixes I was seeing, especially after changing compatability didn't work at all.

And it sees it as RGSS, because that's the platform its built on, its a game building engine, like Unreal etc.Moderator Comment.Glad to hear you got it working. It can be really frustrating when a game won't work and you can't figure out what's causing it.

Usually it's something simple, and usually involves windows settings or conflicts with other programs; though it can also be resolution problems. I'm not sure whether i included the DEP fix over in the FAQ's section of the Game discussion forums. If you ever get a problem running a game again, it's worth checking that FAQ thread. You'll find it in the Game discussion stickies.:). Ahh, I'm glad you got it fixed Marshall.I was getting the same error with windows7 64 bit on my gaming rig, so I know it wasn't my hardware, xD.

I expect I'll return to it a bit later, and explore a bit further! Thanks for another interesting reason for not getting on with work.:-).Moderator comment. Thanks for the feedback Basilica:).

I have all the Aveyond games. In fact, the original Aveyond(after Ahriman's Prophecy)was the first game I ever played on a PC.

I have been addicted ever since. If you like old school style games with the modern convenience of using a mouse, Amanda does a great job of making them fun! This game is a keeper!Note: If you grab the free Ahriman's Prophecy, it is real time based play and a bit harder than the giveaway.;). Like I already thought this is indeed a retro rpg. So far the story seems interesting enough, the controls easy to learn (personally I walk with the arrows and do the rest with the mouse)Does this game has GameMaker written all over it?

Heck yes, do I care HECK NO.For the retro gamers among us, for those that loved the old zelda's and final fantasy's and for those that only have heard about these iconic games GET THIS GAME for what I think is gonna be hours of fun, aggravation, laughter, swearing and puzzling.I had some loading hick-ups during start up and the first few seconds after the first two item pick ups, this went away after that though and didn't rerturn during this brief session.Moderator comment. Thanks for your feedback noname. I agree with you. It's rare to get something more appealing for the dedicated gamer. I've been downloading games from the game giveaway project since the day it was created and prior to that from the giveaway side of the project when they gave an average of a game every three or four days and have rarely een anything other than casual games. Probably the last one of this ilk (but not genre) was the card based RTS game we got about 4 years ago.

Can't remember it's name offhand, but it was quite good.It is not often that I am thrilled with a game presented by GGOTD, not because they have bad games but because the genres they present are more for the casual gamers that are happy with Angry Birds and FarmScapes or Bejeweled but not for the 'hard core' gamers. However this little gem will give loads of fun to 'us' as well, I hope the other episodes will be presented here in the near future as well but I am afraid that if this company is a bit clever.

I would buy the others if the rest of the game is living up to what I have seen so farOnce again thanks GGOTD and Developers at Amaranth. So I played the tutorial, first quest, escaped and I am now resting in Thais. Like I already thought this is indeed a retro rpg.

Played about an hour so far. Enjoyed the retro look and feel: colors, textures, graphics all well done. Gameplay is nice and intuitive, happy to have the option for 'easy/normal/hard'. As a left handed player, its good when I have a game that doesn't require extensive key-mapping to make it playable without massive hand-contortions. Story-line so far looking like a standard RPG, with reasonably decent narration and dialogue.

Definitely worth the download as a freebie, and if the rest of it maintains the quality of the initial gameplay, I may very well purchase the rest of the series. THANKS!!!!.Moderator comment.Thanks. Played the demo a long time ago, but never bought it. This reminds me of the old games, yes.

The first 'adventure' I ever played was LucasArts' 'Loom', and the graphics were much like this! That was a great game, and I bought it from Steam a couple of years ago and replayed it - still fun! This one installed, opened and played with no problems on my XP system. I'm an adventure gamer, not used to the RPGs with battles, but appreciate that the game lets you choose difficulty, which maybe will let me get through it on easy. It seems to involve puzzles as well, like adventure games, so I'm liking it.Not every game that comes along on GGOTD is up my alley, but I download and try most of them, because, after all, they are FREE. LOL, I've sometimes been surprised to find I've enjoyed a type of game I thought I wouldn't, like brickshooters. The only thing I would like a little clearer is how to do battle. Do you just click madly on the enemy (like the bugs in Magic Farm), or do you have to do something else? I mean, I've killed them, but not sure if I'm supposed to get hit, or if I do something different I won't.Moderator comment.Hi phatcat, there are loads of articles, walk-throughs and strategy guides as well as masses of video; some of which have commentary.

I've linked to some in my review above. Hopefully they will clear up the battle process. Played the demo a long time ago, but never bought it. This reminds me of the old games, yes. No go Win 7 x64 Ultimate. Tried DEP & compat modes. Nvidia GeForce GTX 460. 8 BB ram.On C: where it tries to load & either closes or freezes PC.First game that failed in long while but also first game I tried over past several weeks.Moderator comment. One of my secondary computers has the same set up re Win 7 Ultimate 64bit and a NVIDIA 460 Graphics card though only 6GB RAM and the game works fine.

Possibly another problem. Have you worked though the FAQ's thread over in the game discussion forums?

Possibly a resolution problem. I have several steam games that do the same thing when I'm running both my monitors as an extended display. They only work if I turn one off and/or duplicate the display.I wouldn't delete it yet just in case we find a solution via the thread over in the forums. Someone may come up wit another fix.:) Maybe try the demo from the developers site to see if it's the giveaway version that's the problem? No go Win 7 x64 Ultimate. Tried DEP & compat modes.

Being Mother's Day, I just set it up and played for a few minutes. They were right.

Love the music and the retro look. Gonna get Ahriman’s Prophecy tomorrow and between the 2 and how I do.I may just have to buy the others.if need be.Company's here got to go.Thanks Amaranth and GGOTD for a great RPG game. I have all Aveyonds to date, even Ahriman's Prophecy, and am eagerly awaiting the carried on series from Amanda (/thinking (hoping) Mel and Edwards' children will be carrying on the tradition of superb role playing games.???:) ). Please don't pass this up just because some naysayers think 'old game' when they see 'RPG'.

This game is well worth every penny, should you have to pay for it. Thank you Amanda and GAOTD!!!!!.Moderator comment.Too true Charlie.

I did not have to read anything to grab this one and activate it fast!! I am thrilled!! I played the hour demo years ago of the very first one and have been thinking about getting it through Big Fish for the past few months! I am so happy to know that this is the first in a series! I will be buying them for sure!!This game reminds me of the Final Fantasy, Shining Force games! The work they put in to make the colors pop and all the textures!

I know they used RPG Maker in the beginning, and it is a truly beautiful game! Money is hard to get in the beginning for me, the music is so lovely!

The story is engaging. You care about what happens to everyone. I love the landscapes, the flowers, the blobby looking monsters.

You do have to save all the time! One never knows when you will be defeated. I agree with your score. It is a fabulous game. If you are new to rpgs, this is a great game to start with. I am sure there are Let's Play on youtube where a player will go through the entire game and you can go back to it if you get stuck!

I have used this many times for Skyrim and Fallout!!You made this mom very happy Amranth Games and Game give away!!.Moderator comment.Thank you for your feedback. I found the custom cursor very 'jittery' and a bit difficult to control with precision. I am a 'lefty' but the game did not recognize that I have 'switched' my mouse buttons.

I didn't go any further than the Keep. If I had felt I had better control I might have played longer, but it was too annoying. Game deleted. Sorry. Thanks as always for the opportunity to try new things.Moderator comment.I too am a lefty but have managed to adjust my gaming style to cope with the right handed oriented game world (It annoys me that most game controllers are designed for right handers and hardly any of the decent ones have a left hand alternative - for example the Razer Naga mouse an excellent mouse for playing rts games, which has 12 buttons arranged down the left hand side of the mouse and designed so that a right handed person can access the buttons with their thumb easily. I have to use my left pinky which isn't as precise as a thumb.

It's the same with all Gaming keyboards (apart from one I came across recently) where the key pad is designed for right handers. Maybe one day.:). I downloaded it earlier today and got no warning. Maybe your AV software is a little sensitive. Realore Games are a highly respected site. Though it's not beyond the possibility that they may have been hacked.

#22I'm a RPG fan so am happy to see this here. The publisher Amaranth Games also gives away the prequel to this series on their website. You can find it here: www.amaranthia.com/modules/oledrion/product.php?productid=5The prequel is named Ahriman's Prophecy and could be considered Aveyond 0. It was released in 2004, five years before today's game which came out in 2009.

So expect the prequel to be a little more basic and old school. BTW, this is chapter 1 or 4 although it reaches a pretty good conclusion at the end of chapter 2.

Chapters 3 and 4 are sort of like additional stories with the same characters.Great review WR.Moderator comment. Thanks for the feedback Campy and the link to Ahriman's Prophecy. Totally forgot about that.;-). I'm a RPG fan so am happy to see this here. The publisher Amaranth Games also gives away the prequel to this series on their website.
